9 Death on the Danube

9 Death on the Danube

Despite all the shelling the Arrow Cross were still taking captured Jewish partisans and other Jews to the river bank to execute them.
After the liberation of Pest by the Russians, while there was still fighting in Buda, Mother and I tried to find the body of Father. We looked at the hundreds of corpses that were laid out in the nearest hospital grounds and then we went to the Danube, as we had last seen Father not far from the river when we separated. There were bodies lying along the river bank or floating in the water, or trapped in the debris of the bridges that had been blown up. We never found the body of Father nor did we ever find out what had happened to him.
