Dr. Theodore Hertzl (1860-1904)

Born in Budapest, Hungary Hertzl studied law in Vienna. He was an essayist, playwright and Paris correspondent of the 'Neue Freie Presse'. Herzl foresaw the coming catastrophe for European Jewry, and in his book 'The Jewish State' (1896) he argued the necessity of a homeland for the Jewish people. Herzl organized the first Zionist Congress (1897) in Basel Switzerland.
